Dr. Fynn-Thompson is an assistant in Cardiac Surgery and a surgeon for the Heart and Lung Transplant Programs at Children's Hospital Boston.
He was born in Hungary, but moved to Accra, Ghana at the age of 10. He left Ghana to attend Harvard Medical School, and has been in Boston ever since. He did his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and his fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the MGH and Children's. He has been an attending surgeon at Children's since 2005.
Dr. Fynn-Thompson's father is from Ghana, and was a general surgeon in Accra until his retirement in 2007. His mother is from Hungary, and was a pediatrician in Accra until her retirement in 2007. They still live in Accra today. Dr. Fynn-Thompson's brother, Eric, is chief resident in Plastic Surgery at Rhode Island Hospital.
"I always knew that I wanted to return to Ghana and contribute to the welfare of Ghanaians," he says. "So this mission gives me a chance to not only help the children we operate on, but also help those children we can't operate on by training surgeons and nurses here to care for them."
His research activities are focused on clinical and translational projects, primarily with regard to minimally invasive techniques and arrhythmia surgery. He holds an academic appointment as Instructor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School.
